Gilas-Pilipinas looking forward to New Zealand trip
With the FIBA-Asia Championship less than a month away, the Philippine national basketball team is going to New Zealand for a 10-day period to prepare for the tournament in August.
While in New Zealand, Gilas-Pilipinas will be trained by former Lebanon and Jordan head coach Tab Baldwin for a span of five days.
The team will wrap up its training camp on July 16 against the Wellington Saints and on July 18 against the New Zealand national team.
In an interview with Solar Sports Desk, Gilas point guard LA Tenorio said that the team is improving with each training session.
“We're actually getting better every day. Coach Chot (Reyes) and the rest of the coaching staff are doing a good job of preparing us for August. Our goal for the New Zealand trip is for us to be ready and be in game shape pagdating ng August 1 since kulang talaga kami sa tune-up games. And I hope, just like our Lithuanian trip, marami kami matutunan sa New Zealand,” said Tenorio.
The Philippines will be in Group A of the FIBA-Asia Championship together with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Chinese-Taipei.
South Korea to choose naturalized player during Jones Cup
A few days ago, South Korea head coach Yoo Jae-Hak said that the team’s selected naturalized player will be determined during the 2013 Jones Cup Invitational in Taiwan.
Jae-Haek and the Koreans are choosing between Moon Tae-Young and Lee Seung-Jun. The Korean head coach mentioned that he will assess how each player fairs with the rest of the team’s line-up during the Jones Cup before submitting their decision on or before July 12.
In the FIBA-Asia Championship, Korea will be included, along with China, Iran, and Malaysia, in Group C, which many have branded as the “Group of Death.”
Lebanon confident heading to Taiwan
The Lebanon national basketball team left home a few days ago for the 2013 Jones Cup Invitational in Taiwan, followed by a trip to Manila for the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championship.
After spending countless of hours preparing, the team is confident in their roster and ability to win both the Jones Cup and FIBA-Asia tournaments.
Joining Coach Ghassan Sarkis’ team are Fadi El Khatib and naturalized American Lo Woods – players who everyone should watch out for in the following weeks.
Reports indicate that Lebanon is still awaiting word on whether players Elie Rustom and Julian Khazzouh – who suffered injuries over the past few weeks - can suit up for the team in time for the competition in August.
Lebanon is together with Qatar, Japan, and Hong Kong in Group B of the FIBA-Asia Championship.
