University of Visayas Green Lancers, CESAFI defending champion and runner-up to Ateneo in 2007 Collegiate Champions League, top the elimination and quarterfinals phases of the premiere collegiate league in Cebu. Advancing to the semis together with UV are University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars (rank no. 2), University of San Carlos Warriors (rank no. 3) and University of Cebu Webmasters (rank no. 4).
In the best of three semifinal round, UV Green Lancers will go against the USC Warriors while the USJR Jaguars will meet the UC Webmasters. The series winners will compete for the championship and the losers battle for third place.
The top four CESAFI teams have earned coveted seats to the SMART-PLDT Philippine Collegiate Championship games. The CESAFI champion automatically advances to the FilOil Flying V “Sweet 16” Final Challenge and joins the UAAP and NCAA champion and runner-up teams.
The CESAFI runner-up team will join Zone 3 competitions together with champion teams of Regions 4, 5 and 6, the NCAA third placer and a wild card entry. The CESAFI third placer will compete in Zone 4 together with champion teams of Regions 7, 8 and 9, the UAAP third placer and a wild card entry. The top two in the zonal championships will join the elite “Sweet 16” Final Challenge competitions in Manila.
Meanwhile, Rey Gamboa, Champions League chairman, announced that proposals for the hosting of the nine regional and four zonal championships are being evaluated and will be announced shortly. The regional games will be held during the period September 27 to October 12 while the zonals will be from November 6 to November 15.
